Description Credits: 12 Ensemble Description: The 12 Ensemble is an up-and-coming string ensemble from the UK! The 12 Ensemble is a young string ensemble founded in 2012, made up of 12 young London string players, who are rapidly making a name for themselves. This disc, almost their debut, is a fill-up of the three current composers’ particular works, with a focus on Lutoslawski’s early “Funeral Music”. Britain’s John Woolrich (1954-)’s “Awakening Ulysses,” for viola solo and strings, is based on an aria from Monteverdi’s opera “The Homecoming of Ulisse.” Female composer Kate Whitley’s (1989-) “Autumn Song” is inspired by Verlaine’s poem, in which the strings depict falling leaves. An interesting piece is “Response to Lutoslawski” by Bryce Dessner (1976-), lead guitarist of the American rock band “The National. Dessner, who has also performed with Ryuichi Sakamoto, composed this piece in 2014 as a tribute to Lutoslawski’s “Funeral Music,” and it is a valuable addition to the 12 Ensemble’s repertoire.
