Description Find out how the drinking bird work with this full description here Teaching ideas for a Drinking Bird Toy Investigate the boiling point of methylene chloride and compare this to water. This is the liquid inside the drinking bird. Liquids will expand as they heat up because of the increased energy of the molecules inside of them. Why not make a simple thermometer to model this expansion in your class? The tipping motion of the toy is determined by changes in centres of balance. Investigate centres of balance using the broom balance trick or using a balance bird toy. Does it matter how warm the cup of water is? Try different temperatures from your tap. Try iced water too! NB: – don’t use very hot or boiling water as it will break your drinking bird. The toy is designed to work well at 25oC. Try simply holding the bottom bulb of the drinking bird.
