Open Water Coaching Certification Program Virtual Clinic Course Description Virtual Clinic led by Coach Marcia Benjamin, founder and head coach of MEMO, the 2021 United States Masters Swimming Club of the Year. This certification course and clinic will provide the tools to safely implement and improve open water swimming experiences for all levels of swimmers. Take the online course at your own pace and join four weekly live zoom discussion sessions led by Coach Marcia Benjamin. Designed for year-round head and assistant coaches, masters coaches, group leaders, and anyone who wants to create safe, fun open water swimming experiences. You will be provided the tools to introduce a novice swimmer to their first 1K, run training groups in the open water, and coach swimmers in elite 5K, 10K, 25K competitions, channel and marathon swimming. The course covers everything from safety protocols, and reading weather and water condition apps, to proper open water swimming techniques and race day tactics. What to expect in this course The certification program will educate coaches and open water leaders on everything from safety to open water swimming technique to race tactics. Individuals who pass the program will be able to safely coach all levels of swimmers from short introductory open water swims to racing and even marathon swims like the English Channel. An Overview of the Entire Course Open Water Safety History of the Sport Evolution of Competitive Open Water Swimming Marine Environment Best Practices Pyramid of Success Equipment Psychology Certification Levels Level 1 – a score of 75% correct answers on the WOWSA test. Level 2 – a score of 80% and coach one athlete who has completed a 5K swim in open water. Level 3 – A score of 85% and coach one athlete who has completed a 10K Swim in open water. Level 4 – A score of 90% and coach one athlete who has completed a 25K swim, or competed in a national championship event. Level 5 – A score of 95% and coach one athlete who has competed in the Olympic Games or an international championship event or completed a channel crossing.
